Prof. Sripada Subrahmanya Shastri is a great scholar of three major shastras – Vyākaraṇa, Nyāya, and Advaita Vedānta. He served as Professor and Registrar at Telugu University, Hyderabad. He has also been the director of Oriental Manuscripts Library, A.P. government. He is an examiner for the Vyākaraṇa stream of the celebrated Tenali exam.
Having learnt that he was to deliver a talk at Tripunithura Government Sanskrit College, we requested the learned scholar to address our students and faculty at Chinmaya Eswar Gurukula. Prof. Sripada-ji agreed and delivered a talk on Vedanta at Chinmaya Eswar Gurukula, Chinmaya University’s Kochi Campus, on Saturday, November 11th.
The topic of his scholarly talk was फलाधिकरणम् – ब्रह्मसूत्रभाष्यम्- ३-२-८.This adhikaraṇa contains four aphorisms of Maharṣi Bādarāyaṇa also known as Veda Vyāsa. In this adhikaraṇa, it is expounded that the fruits of action(कर्मफलम्) are conferred by Ishvara, not Karma. Karma or the product of Karma i.e. apurva are insentient, hence, they are not capable of conferring कर्मफलम्. Ishvara is sentient (चेतन:) and therefore is capable of giving कर्मफलम्. He presented his talk in the typical Vākyārtha (meaning of a sentence) Mode. Our faculty and students were fortunate to be enlightened by such an exemplary traditional scholar.
